How My Rare Condition Led Me to Start My Own Home Decor Business
Introduction
"Life has a way of shifting our paths in ways we never expect. I never imagined I’d start a home decor business, but sometimes, challenges push us toward new beginnings. For me, creating handmade decor wasn’t just about making beautiful pieces—it became a way to reclaim my independence, find purpose, and build something for myself despite the limitations life tried to place on me."
The Turning Point
"A few years ago, I was diagnosed with polycythemia vera, a rare, non-curable blood cancer that affects my energy, strength, and daily life. Suddenly, I found myself labeled as ‘unfit for work.’ The fatigue, pain, and unpredictable nature of my condition made it impossible to continue in a traditional 9-5 job. But I wasn’t willing to just sit at home and rely on benefits. I needed to do something—something that allowed me to work at my own pace, on my own terms."
Why Home Decor?
"I’ve always been drawn to elegant, timeless decor—especially pieces inspired by Middle Eastern and Islamic artistry. But finding home decor with that luxurious, intricate, yet neutral aesthetic was often expensive and out of reach. I realized that if I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted, maybe I could create something similar myself."
"That’s when I started experimenting with materials, learning about different casting techniques, and making pieces that reflect the beauty of Middle Eastern-inspired elegance—without the high price tag. Every piece I create is designed to be affordable yet luxurious, simple yet timeless."
Turning Passion into a Business
"What started as a personal creative outlet soon turned into something more. Even though my condition slows me down some days, having this business gives me a sense of purpose, control, and fulfillment. I can work at my own pace, create pieces that I love, and share them with people who appreciate beautiful, meaningful home decor."
"I work from a small space at home, handcrafting each item with care. It’s not about mass production—it’s about quality, creativity, and passion. Some days are harder than others, but knowing that my work is bringing a touch of elegance into someone’s home makes it all worth it."
More Than Just Decor
"This business isn’t just about selling home accessories—it’s about proving to myself (and others) that I am more than a diagnosis. That despite my condition, I can create, build, and contribute in my own way. It’s about redefining what it means to ‘work’ and showing that slow progress is still progress."
"And more than anything, it’s about creating pieces that people genuinely love—pieces that bring warmth, elegance, and culture into their spaces."
